It describes how a team of librarians, archivists, couriers, and regular people smuggled a huge trove of priceless ancient manuscripts out of Timbuktu in the midst of a fundamentalist uprising, essentially saving them from being destroyed forever.

Unfortunately, the manuscripts are still in danger from the change in climate and conditions. I'm involved in running an Indeigogo campaign to help fund the preservation effort. The project is appealing to me as a gamer, a geek, and a lover of knowledge. It's like being present when the Library of Alexandria has caught fire and finding you have a bucket handy.

There's a lot about this project that's amazingly cool. Not only is it chance to save something priceless from disappearing forever, but it's a chance to personally become a part of saving it. We're able to physically put each contributor's dedication on the box of a manuscript they helped save. I suggest checking out the video. It's worth seeing.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00923748337647812135noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2206657754721636993.post-75059283956534320642013-05-10T09:43:00.001-07:002013-05-10T09:43:13.511-07:00When will things get back to normal?
The answer is not very soon. Thanks again to everyone who offered kind words on my art and/or supported the Kickstarter. It was a blast. I'm still dealing with the last few wrinkled of fulfillment, but it's essentially done.

I've got a bunch of new projects in various stages from "just an idea" to "almost ready," but everything is on hold now as I'm getting involved in a new and entirely different crowdfunding effort. It's not game or art related, particularly, but I'll post a link here when we launch nonetheless, because it is pretty cool and very exciting!
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00923748337647812135noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2206657754721636993.post-71191847748722448882013-04-05T21:29:00.000-07:002013-04-05T21:29:46.396-07:00The Eye of the StormThis is a weird weekend. For the first time since the beginning of January, I don't have any pressing Kickstarter-related things I have to be doing. The poster has already been delivered to the printer. I've seen a proof and it looks fabulous. It'll be ready next week. Jez is wrapping up the last bit of layout on the book. He doesn't need any more artwork from me. I've ordered the huge pallet of shipping tubes for the poster and stored them in my basement. I don't have anything to mail yet. Next week is going to be crazy. The week after will be crazy. But this week, I get to relax.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00923748337647812135noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2206657754721636993.post-71973290515717594282013-03-23T15:22:00.001-07:002013-03-23T15:22:32.913-07:00Aliens for EpidiahMy friend Epidiah requested some alien drawings, so I took a little break from doing layout on the Seattle Survival Guide book (almost done!) to draw these. They're in the mail, Epidiah!

I just wanted to post a quick blog update and let people know what's going on. The Kickstarter for the Seattle Doomsday Map was a fabulous success, and now I'm deep in the process of fulfilling the backer rewards. I spent today printing and signing backer postcards. The Dee Dee's Survival Guide is a hair away from the final edit and layout. I'm ready to make the poster order as soon as the book design is ready. Things are looking great! In the Real World, my work has never been busier (I work as a tech writer and consultant), which means even more things to squeeze into the day. On the horizon I've got a few more art projects, as well as a Dungeon World campaign faction game thingy that's sort of half Stars Without Number, half How to Host a Dungeon. So life is busy! I can't wait until things slow down and I have more time to blog.

Oh my, there are a lot of them.

Backers will get their maps first, I promise, and naturally not all the exclusive rewards are available, etc.
I love this stuff. This is what's great about dungeon adventure gaming. Every time I think I've squeezed everything dungeon-themed out of my brain, I see someone else's work with a new slant or a new aesthetic, and I want to go back to the dungeon again. Also, it has an Ankheng.

Today I received an Email from Lee Mothes, the cartographer of New Island. Lee has created a whole world to encompass his maps and landscape paintings. I highly recommend taking a look at his blog, it's very cool. The paintings are gorgeous, and the verisimilitude of the world is amazing. There's also a New Island YouTube video that explains his work in more detail.

Regular readers will know that for the last year+ I've been painting my map of post-apocalyptic Seattle. Well the map is now up on Kickstarter! I'm selling road map versions, art prints, and a guidebook. Go check it out! A ton of thanks is due to everyone who helped out, gave encouragement, commented, or have followed the project along. Thanks, everyone! Let's make this an awesome Kickstarter!

Parts of this hood have gone wild, but there are a few holdouts scattered near the wreckage at Pike and Pine Streets. They cook up a decent rotgut in the old brewery.

You can always find a party in Pike Pine. And if things get out of hand, Sheriff Willow and her band of bulldogs put it right in a hurry. Don’t get on her bad side, especially if you’re an outsider.

This used to be all hospitals and it’s so big that nobody’s ever scrounged all of it. Stay away from the pharmacies and storefronts though, they’re all picked over and some nutcase seeded them with landmines, so it’s not worth the effort.
Recent reports are something I hunting here–human or animal it’s not too shy about eating you, so tread lightly and stay alert.

Shepp and his gang of addle-headed apostles live just on the border here. They seem harmless, but some as go to their revivals don’t come out right.

Lots of people in Denny, but they aren’t folk. A few rival gangs, so don’t get caught wearing the wrong color. I opt for black. Still, you can find copper wire, electronics, and supplies if you know where to look.

One of the gangs here has a secret stash of clean water and lords it over the rest of them. Another gang has a scrounge racket trading in working car batteries. Another one collects ears, so know who you’re dealing with.

This is the beating heart of Post Seattle, some say; a glimpse of civilization; our own resident metropolis; also known as scum-town, dirt-town, and no-town.

Bell Town is one place you can still buy a decent espresso. And most anything else is available at the Slab Market for a price. Folks here even have a sort of law. Note that justice is particularly harsh and swift for fraud and theft; murder less so.

People here still dig music like they did in The Day, so keep your ears open after sundown and you might just hear something worth hearing. Plenty of underground clubs open after sundown.

Was a big brawl near here once. Still loads of military hardware scattered around the place, though most of it’s burned. The frequent roadblocks keep the motor gangs out, but that don’t make it friendly.

There’s a once-a-month weapons market in the park. The gangs consider that an essential service, so they police each other, sort of. Don’t stick around after closing time.

If you need a place to crash in a pinch, and getting by in the Empty isn’t your gig, you can always bivouac at Tent City, though it’s not so much a city as a bunch of villages. Still, everyone’ll band together when a real crisis shows up, which is pretty often. Zoners and gangs show up here pretty often to make trouble. Tent City’s main defense is that there’s little here that’s worth your life to take. Not as much fun as Bell Town, but loads more honest.

Guy named Romulus runs a sort of clinic out of an old café. They’ll patch you up for free.

If Cap Hill's your destination, take the overpass from downtown. The freeway might look inviting, but the lower deck's loaded with wild animals, deadfalls, and worse nasties.

You might have seen his hand-drawn OD&D inspired maps show up on Boing Boing a few weeks ago. And now he has a Kickstarter where you can get prints, pictures, and a personal hand-drawn dungeon map!

Wild dogs and dangerous vagrants here. even the good scrounge’s been picked over.

Some smart geeks’ve set up a pig farm on a rooftop, though. Use the shit to run their generators and grow things hydroponic style. If you send some useful scrap up to them, they might just send down some hothouse cabbages.

There's a scrounger's den on Denny street. Look for the yellow flags. Climb in the third basement window on the left and secure it behind yourself. If you take something from the stash make sure you leave something in return.

There’s a sniper in the tower who will shoot you. Stay clear. Plenty of decent scrounge here though, on account of the tower and packs of wild dogs. They say the buildings move while you’re sleeping.

The Vic is an exceptionally popular and versatile fighter base used by many, many lego builders. If you're a Mechaton fan, think of it as the space fighter version of the base mech chassis.

While I was researching, I discovered that one of my favorite builders, whose work I have admired for a very long time, passed away over two years ago! This is a picture of the "missing man" Vic Viper formation that the community made for him at BrickCon (I think it was in 2010). So here's an overdue tribute to Nnen and to the Vic Viper.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00923748337647812135noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2206657754721636993.post-89862486113719659522012-10-04T10:00:00.000-07:002012-10-04T10:00:05.534-07:00The Blue WizardThis guys is a good guy to have on your side.

- It's fitting for the task at hand
- It's not cheap junk that will break at the slightest provocation
- It's pretty simple and intuitive to useAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00923748337647812135noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2206657754721636993.post-24151990715449457252012-10-03T20:07:00.000-07:002012-10-03T20:07:18.873-07:00Blasting out of Vesta: Stars Without NumberToday we fired up our first session of a new Stars Without Number sandbox game. The idea is to play super-fast sessions weekly on a Wednesday afternoon. I was super nervous about it all day and sure it was going to be a failure. First of all, short sessions on a weekday afternoon while normal people are at work? Crazy. Setting up a game by just inviting everyone you can think of then telling them they don't have to show up? Nuts.
But we had a great time anyway. Jon, John, and Jobe came by, made up some characters, invited a bit of backstory, and galvanized the team in a single half-hour encounter. Some folks made up two characters because, you know, space is deadly.
So Dex is a down-on-his luck space trucker. He's been playing it by the book, but now his flight status has been revoked, the company's repossessing his ship, and his appeal is being ignored. And he doesn't even know why! So he gets his hands on some launch codes and books a "no questions asked" cargo run. He's hired some losers and outcasts to crew for him! He's going to steal his own ship and make some cash to pay his lawyers! But first he has to get out Vesta.
Session one saw a gun battle with Confed Trade Authority goons in a backwoods asteroid port. Dex and his engineer Stan got perforated with needler rounds, but fortunately the 16 year old runaway on the crew is also a (technically) unlicensed bio-psionic. In game terms, this means they didn't just die outright. Now the guy who hired them is dead, but they've got the advance on the delivery and the cargo itself. Dex and Stan need desperate medical attention, but that OK, because Chet kidnapped a surgeon before they blasted out of Vesta on their (technically) stolen starship.
